CBMGA and Texas Forestry Service Present our 2019 Free Tree Give Away

February 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Tree Giveaway Sawtooth Oak a very fast growing oak from Asia, sets heavy crops of acorns every year beginning at about 8 years of age. Acorns ripen early fall dropping normally the end of Sept. on into October. Excellent mast crop for wild turkeys, squirrels, deer and wild hogs.

Cherry Bark Oak: Fairly rare species in this region. It has a beautiful dark trunk as it gets older, flaky bark resembles older black cherry tree trunks.

White Oak: Very common in this region, does better as an upland hardwood tree. Very common along the higher ridges and bluffs all along the Sulfur River, White Oak Creek and the Cypress River basin. White oak tree trunks were split to produce “Oak wood shakes” for pioneer home steads and barn roofs. Wood is naturally rot resistant. Used for split rail fences. Currently many award winning Bar B-Q chefs use the wood from White oaks as it imparts a mild, sweet flavor to slow cooked smoked meats. Acorns are larger on the trees in the white oak family.

Pecans: Seedling trees from a selection of native pecan trees. These do well of a vast array of soil types. From deep sandy loam to flood plain heavy clay soils. You can plant these seedlings, grow them 1 to 3 years and then graft a “paper” shell scion wood/limb to produce a named variety of Pecans that will produce larger nuts.

Yellow Popular: is a faster growing tree in this region, excellent for shade in yards and or fields and pastures.

Silky Dogwoodhttps://www.friendsofthewildflowergarden.org/pages/plants/paledogwood.html I am not familiar with this tree locally. It is similar in appearance and growth habits to the Drummond Dogwood (Rough Leafed Dogwood) that is very common in the northern parts of Titus County then on north to the Red river. Both of these species are excellent food for wildlife.

Bald Cypress: Although these grow well in swamps and flood plains they are a very fast growing tree in upland soils and also on very sandy soils once they become established. The largest trees in the State of Texas on the Big Tree lists are going to be Bald Cypress. These were once the dominant tree species along all of the river systems in East and Central Texas.

Red Oak:  There will also be about 100 nice Red Oak seedlings, these have excellent red foliage in the fall.

CBMG need to share the details of this tree give away and spread the details of this event with your friends and on social media locations. Keith Kridler
