CBMGA Field Trip to Cobhill
April 11 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Cobhill – A magical place where students learn how to build structures from Cob.
Cob is a natural building material made by mixing, typically, 1 part clay subsoil and 2-3 parts coarse sand, along with water and straw (fiber). The mix is blended, often by stomping on a tarp, to create a stiff, sticky dough. Straw is added for tensile strength to prevent cracking, producing durable, load-bearing walls.
Basic Cob Recipe (Ratios may vary based on soil composition):
- 1 Part Clay Soil/Subsoil: Acts as the binder.
- 2 to 3 Parts Sand/Aggregate: Provides structure, reduces shrinkage.
- Straw: Fresh, dry straw or wheat straw added for fiber strength.
- Water:
Added sparingly to achieve a sticky, workable consistency.
