Welcome to our Greenhouse page.    The Slideshow is of some photos that were taken during the conversion to a fully functioning Greenhouse. And on the right side of the table are links to photos of the greenhouse starting in 2008.

The Greenhouse was built and installed as a Hoop House in 2008 after it was donated to Cypress Basin Master Gardeners. For several years it functioned as a hoop house raising vegetables in the ground in the hoop house. In 2014 a project was done to build various types of raised beds out of different materials in the hoop house. But it still functioned as a hoop house with no climate control other than an exhaust fan.
Then over the winter of 2017-2018, an initial trial run was made to see if we could modify the hoop house to function as a greenhouse. Over each raised bed, we constructed PVC frames to support clear plastic sheeting to create micro-environments for each raised bed. On cold nights, we added 100-200 watt lighting under the sheeting to provide warmth to keep the plants from freezing. Then in January of 2018, we experienced the coldest weather in 20 years. It got down to 7°F outside temperature at the extension offices. Over those extremely cold nights we covered the plastic sheeting with quilts and anything we could find to help insulate the plants from the cold. Because we were planning on using the plants in the greenhouse for our upcoming plant sale, we had installed 8-10 2’x3’x7′ plastic shelving units. To protect the plants on the shelving we covered the shelving with plastic sheeting that we could roll up and down so the plants would not get too hot during the day and to facilitate watering. Much to our surprise, we did not lose one single plant to the cold that winter.
With the success over the winter of 2017-2018, we made the decision to go forward with the conversion. Then in 2018, the gals of CBMGA built our flood and drain tables that we continue to use today. Check out their completion pic here with their finished tables. We added a storeroom on the north end of the greenhouse, added a heater, new exhaust fan, ventilation louvers, an inside layer of sheet plastic and a new double layer roof with a fan to inflate the air between the layers. With all of that, the greenhouse has been a welcome addition to provide a semi climate controlled area to better facilitate the propagation of plants for our plant sale.
The Greenhouse has been totally converted to be a greenhouse to be used for CBMGA to propagate plants for our plant sale.

Mary Christensen
Mary
CBMGA started transitioning our hoophouse/demonstration area into a full throat-ed Greenhouse in 2018.  That was a challenging year as the temperature went down to the lowest it had been here in decades.  Somehow we managed to coax all of our efforts at propagation for our plant sale to make it through that winter.  Mary Christensen was and continues to be a major force in the success of our efforts.  Mary is so good at seeds, we continually use the old adage, “She could plant a fence post and it would grow.”  So thank you Mary and all of the other Master Gardeners that have been instrumental in transitioning our hoophouse to our Greenhouse and Propagation facility.
